Somewhere Far Away

She looked to her left and she looked to her right,
There were unironically plenty of people in sight
She could've crossed the road and taken the underbridge home
But why isn't what we expect ever to be found in a poem
A story has value when hearts are shattered
Her eyes did the screaming, her wrists shook dread
She was terrified of finding that familiar face,
And yet it was all her fingers could trace
Lucky are those who have loved and lost,
Luckier still who built a rosebed cot
But what if the caressing hand smacked you hard
Knocking the wind off your lungs, throwing you afar
It could've been a mistake, it started small
The steaming tea cup he couldn't hold for long
Your feet burned, but in his kisses they were soothed
When he pushed you away in anger, within minutes he rued
You weren't physically hurt then, pfft - better than before too
Something was changing though, the longer blues?
One day, he yelled the roof down, the next a broken vase
More remorse, more guilt - benumbing it all was
You could leave now, but his claws are already in too deep
You're strong but this could be one momentous feat
Perhaps his eyes you search for and his arms you crave
But you know it shan't be, and you're somewhere far away
